Amy Morin: The 13 Habits of Mentally Healthier People

Drift’s HyperGrowth18 East in Boston started off with psychotherapist Amy Morin discussing healthy habits – and what bad habits cost us.

What makes some people go through hard times and stay optimistic? And how come some people stay stuck?

It has a lot to do with their habits. There were certain habits they didn’t do.

People who have unhealthy core beliefs tend to do the things that mentally strong people don’t do.

Healthier people have these things in common, with the first 5 being beliefs about yourselves, the next 4 being beliefs about others, and the last 4 being beliefs about the world:

  1. They don’t waste time feeling sorry for themselves.
  2. They don’t dwell on the past.
  3. They don’t make the same mistakes over and over.
  4. They don’t give up after the first failure.
  5. They don’t fear alone time. When asked if you’d like to spend 15 minutes of time alone with yourself or get an electric shock, 25% of women said they’d take the shock – as did 75% of men.
  6. They don’t give away their power.
  7. They don’t waste energy on things they can’t control.
  8. They don’t worry about pleasing everyone.
  9. They don’t resent other people’s success.
  10. They don’t shy away from change.
  11. They don’t fear taking calculated risks.
  12. They don’t feel like the world owes them anything.
  13. They don’t expect immediate results.

How do you get to that healthier spot?

In short, you have to train your brain to think differently. Her best metaphor is that physically healthy people don’t say, “I’m fit, so I can stop going to the gym.” Mentally healthier people don’t say that either.
