Every first week of July
We fete our independence
With fireworks and apple pie
We sport our flag-shaped pendants
A model for a nation’s forge
We separated state from Lord
Then traded for a better George
When snipping the king’s umbilical cord
While independence still inspires
And scratches itches Libertarian
We oft forget the effort it requires
So here’s a thought that’s contrarian
What if we also marked a day
For us to pass to our descendants
That makes our nation lead the way
In honoring one Day of Dependence
Dependence Day! How blasphemous!
Aren’t we the chosen land of brave,
Majestic, purple, mountainous
Who takes our freedoms to the grave?
Yet try a change in point of view
Once your grilled appetite is sated
True independent wins are few
Such claims are false; they’re all inflated
How great if we could recognize
A day for each achieved alliance
Dependence Day we open eyes
Acknowledging our shared reliance
Bosses, staff, progenitors
Spouses, kids, our friends and neighbors
Teachers, cops, and janitors
We’re all dependent through our labors
While some others who we need to grow
Are warmer and some others colder
Each one of us can look below
We’re standing on a giant’s shoulder
Let’s shed the cloak that we alone
Are heroes in our tales so mythic
Dependence Day we can atone
For stories that sound monolithic
As our own nation loves to forget
A fact that makes some moderns skittish
Without the French (sans Lafayette)
Our accents here would still be British
As one who’s been a sole proprietor
I’ve never thought that there’s just me
Yet still I’ve sinned of speaking quieter
Of those who join any victory
Though independence never tires
Its opposite is due for ascendance
Cheers to the work community requires
Have the happiest Day of Dependence

WHEN IS INFLUENCER MARKETING REAL?
Susan Getgood, the surprise speaker at the Serial Speakers event last month, wrote an essay looking at one actually fake influencer and another real influencer who came off as fake. When are influencers real? When is influence real? And when does it matter? Susan gets us a bit closer to an answer.
