As for the topic at hand…
I know I’m not alone in how I can’t stop trying more of generative AI tools, both for text and images. The Lensa headshots that have become a new meme can make you see yourself in a new way – and also make you a little uncomfortable with the caricatures that exaggerate features you don’t necessarily want highlighted.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT is the real game-changer though. This is the great leap forward. It’s freeing.
My daughter loves AI-generated art; she likes to test such bots with the query “Jesus visits the gastroenterologist” after taking a cue from her dad. When I had ChatGPT write a story about her, it spit out a description so eerily specific to her personality that she said she was scared and left the room before I got halfway through reading it.
It ended like this:
“Despite living in a busy city, she is a very grounded and down-to-earth girl who loves spending time with her family and friends. She is kind and compassionate, and always looks out for others. She is a true New Yorker at heart, and she loves everything about her city.”
They might be platitudes, sort of like a horoscope, but you know how sometimes horoscopes seem to speak directly to you? This was one of those horoscopes – one that becomes a mirror. My eight-year-old, who has a better-defined sense of self than literally anyone I’ve ever met, couldn’t take it.
She was more open to using ChatGPT when she wanted to generate a list of chores for doing her allowance. It was this use case that is one of many that will change how we search for information, and then how we generate ideas. It will be our job to select the best ideas among those generated, rather than coming up with all of the ideas ourselves.
I also hope we don’t get so bogged down in the existential questions of AI that we forget to have fun.
I entered the prompt, “Write a press release explaining that David Berkowitz the serial marketer is not the same person as David Berkowitz the serial killer.” While I shared it on LinkedIn, it’s too good not to include below in full. To be clear, what I’ve pasted below hasn’t been edited at all.

David Berkowitz the serial killer, also known as the “Son of Sam,” is a convicted murderer who terrorized New York City in the 1970s. He is currently serving a life sentence in prison.
We want to assure the public that David Berkowitz the serial marketer has no association with the crimes committed by David Berkowitz the serial killer and should not be confused with him.
We apologize for any confusion or concern this may have caused. Thank you for your understanding.

There are so many lines I keep rereading. And it’s even eerily in my own voice. If I shared this as my own writing, I can’t imagine anyone would question a word of it.
From here, everything changes.

My daughter’s reaction was right. I need to leave the room.
