Ethical Debate: Do You Correct a Copywriter’s Tagline? Tweeters Respond

Yesterday I posed a question on Twitter: “open question: if a copywriter emails you and she has a grammatical error in the tagline in her sig, do you correct her?” The responses were so thoughtful I had to blog them, as my roundup couldn’t easily fit in 140 characters. These are all public responses, viewable when searching my username ‘dberkowitz’ on Twitter.
The responses were overwhelmingly in favor of correcting her. And I did take these to heart. I responded, but posing it more as a question, and she was very appreciative.
Thanks to everyone for responding. I’m constantly learning about the value of Twitter in the process of using it. I’m also learning the importance of double-checking email signatures.

In Favor of Correcting

soxgal: @dberkowitz It’d be nice if you did. Someone I know has a typo in his biz card. Reminds me I need to let him know.
msebastian: @dberkowitz Without question.
KRamness: @dberkowitz of course you do!
mleis: @dberkowitz LOL. Yes.
patkiernan: @dberkowitz Should correct. You can’t let someone go around for life with a mistake in her email signature. [An aside for NYers: this is Pat Kiernan of NY1 and PatsPapers.com – pardon, had to plug my favorite news anchor)
WriteLeft: RT @dberkowitz: if a copywriter emails you and she has a grammatical error in the tagline in her sig, do you correct her? YES and YES
katiewinchell: @dberkowitz Absolutely – the professional equivalent of telling someone he has spinach on his tooth. 🙂
Ginger_Tulley: @dberkowitz Yes! If she’s a pro she’ll appreciate it.
SusanArts: @dberkowitz – if a copywriter contacts you and she has an gram error, you should absolutely correct her!
alonsofb: @dberkowitz Correct her first, ask questions later.
jacqui_cooper: @dberkowitz Correct the copywriter. I had a simple error in my phone number (missed off one number) that went unnoticed for weeks.

Against Correcting
iFroggy: @dberkowitz Not me.
arjunsethi: @dberkowitz not unless you want her to kill you! its not like how it used to be in the old days “mad men” amc 🙂

Disbelief (or just hoping it wasn’t the case)
boltbuzz108: @dberkowitz could the error have been made on purpose (like a literary device)?

Diplomacy
codygibbs: @dberkowitz I think so but do it passive aggressively by including an overt spelling mistake in your own tagline.

Thanks for the mention. Seeing all of those yes answers might make me reconsider but, truthfully, it really depends on the typo and the relationship I have with the person, I guess. 🙂

Thanks for contributing. And hey, for me it wasn’t the easiest call
especially since it was someone I didn’t know who wrote me to introduce
    themselves.
