I’m in Palm Springs, CA for MediaPost’s Search Insider Summit. Once my connecting flight in Denver was fully boarded, we were stuck at the gate for awhile, only to find out there was a weight problem. The crew was busy calculating the weight of the passengers, baggage, and fuel so that we’d be able to take off. The first thought: we Americans really are that obese. Discussing this with a few others at the SIS cocktail reception, another theory arose: with the new regulations causing more passengers to check bags, people will wind up packing much more. On a related note, see the New York Times’s piece from the weekend on how more checked bags means more lost luggage (you might not check bags again once you read it – 200,000 bags a year are lost for good).
