Pecha Kucha – Word of the Day at MAGNET

This weekend I participated in the Marketing and Advertising Global Advertising Network’s Customer Engagement Seminar in Jacksonville, FL, and while I’ve been learning a ton from fellow speakers, one of my favorite discoveries, via Jeff Larche, was not a topic but a presentation format: the Pecha Kucha. It’s a style of using 20 slides with 20 images or videos that tell a story in 6 minutes and 40 seconds to quickly convey an idea. Wikipedia writes:

Pecha Kucha (pronounced peh-chak-cha) was started in Tokyo, Japan in February 2003 by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham as a designers’ show and tell event to attract more people to SuperDeluxe, their multi-media experimental event space they had set up in Roppongi. The idea behind Pecha Kucha is to keep presentations concise, the
interest level up and to have many presenters sharing their ideas
within the course of one night. Therefore the 20×20 Pecha Kucha format
was created:

While I’ve been giving more presentations of the 30-60 minute variety lately, I’ll be curious to try one of these sometime soon, perhaps even a mini version like a 15-slider (5 minutes) when on a panel. Have you ever used this? It fits well with what I keep trying to do – killing text wherever possible on a slide and trying to pick one strong image (usually a screen shot) to convey a lot of information in a way that’s easy to digest.

Thanks for the mention, David. Also, I just uploaded my fairly ham-handed attempt at a Pecha Kucha on YouTube, embedded in my blog. It was my hope to whet the appetites of conference attendees on the new Content Interest Index, a web metric used to measure visitor interest. I don’t know if I succeeded, but if nothing else, at least it was short! 😉
