The Artful Catalyst

Catalyst: “A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself undergoing any permanent chemical change.” (Oxford Languages, via Google)

About 95% of the time I get on a call with someone about a project, I assume I won’t be able to help them directly. Instead, I see if I can refer people, tech, and other means of support.

I let them know this in advance, telling them, “I may not be able to help directly, but I can almost certainly save you some time and get you further along with what you need.”

The other 5% of the time, I know I’m the right one for what they need. I’m near certain that we should be working together. I had a few of those calls this week. I could tell them with full confidence, “One way or another, we need to figure something out.”

Those calls are the best — but the other 95% are pretty good too. With those other calls, the value is that of a catalyst. I get to trigger a reaction. And then I do what catalysts do best:

I get out of the way.

I often talk about catalysts in another way when describing how Serial Marketers has come this far, crossing the 2,000-member mark this month with a slew of updates of how we’re creating new value for members.

In the Forbes profile that Mat Zucker just authored about the community, he quoted me as saying, “It’s important to figure out who the catalysts are” when building a community. “They’re not always who you predict they will be.”

I bring up catalysts a ton, and I can think of a number of them who have stood out the past few years. They’re the ones who have been so responsive to others’ posts, or who have created engaging content, or they’ve breathed life into certain channels, or they’ve repeatedly connected members with each other.

Most of the time those people have come forward, I’ve had a hard time remembering how I met them. They’re rarely my closest friends, though several have crossed that “work friend” to “real friend” chasm as I’ve gotten to know them.

It’s been the most unpredictable factor with Serial Marketers’ success. They appreciated the vision for the community before I even had the vision. Or they add another layer to what’s already there.

That’s where the magic of catalysts comes into play. They take two disparate elements and say, “These two can transform each other when paired together.”

All most people see is the reaction that happens and the new chemistry that emerges.

Catalysts are okay with that. They step back, unchanged, ready to keep transforming others.
