I was doing yoga at home using a mobile app streamed to my TV this morning, and the naughtier of my cats, Cash, used this as an opportunity to hop on the dining room table. He knows he is not supposed to.
I paused my yoga and shooed him off.
At the end of yoga, I needed stoppage time. So I added some on.
Isn’t stoppage time a brilliant invention?
Admittedly, I only saw less than one-and-a-half games of the World Cup – the final two Team USA played. Matches? Contests? Do you even call them games? I don’t know. I don’t follow soccer, or as they call it outside of the States, grassball.
Still, that added buffer that the refs tack on to the end of the game is one of those inventions that seems universally applicable. Like the concept of the Sabbath, even metaphorically instead of literally – a break from your normal way of business once in a cycle. Or the idea of passports – shouldn’t we get collectible booklets memorializing all kinds of our prized achievements and activities?
Stoppage time is one that could have all kinds of implications.
Like, we keep our meetings to 25 or 50 minutes instead of the half- or full hour, as I know some of you do. But what if we added stoppage time at the end for all the tech glitches, personal emergencies, or other distractions that arise? The host just goes “25+3,” and then the meeting ends in 28 minutes.
Or what if you’re tucking your kid into bed, and you wind up pausing to answer a pressing text or email that came through. Your kid then gets another six minutes stoppage time, and you get to spend more time doing what you really wanted to do.
The same can happen when we’re taking a walk to work or on some errand, and we’re stuck on our devices so much that we’re on autopilot. Stoppage time! Add +5 to the walk and go around the block twice more, devices away and your AirPods in your pocket. Take those extra 5 to pay attention to where you are.
Imagine if this could be built into the workweek. Companies that have implemented meeting-free days get this, as do some international experiments with the four-day workweek.
You know all those unforeseen obstacles that come from the top down or bottom up or just you getting in your own way?
Or at home, all the dishes you kept meaning to get to? Mail you kept meaning to open? Closets you kept meaning to reorganize?
With stoppage time, you get that +8 or +24 hours to do it.
The danger is when we count on stoppage time. When it’s the crutch.
How many of us operate this way with sleep? “I’ll make it up on the weekend.”
Or with life?
But if we build some of that stoppage time in, and we know we’ll have a little extra room to make things right, even the score, and get ahead…
Maybe we can be the selves we wanted to be all along.
